Esmee Talks Justin With BBC Radio

As you may have guessed from her Twitter, Esmee has been in the UK promoting her single Outta Here, which has reached #3 on the UK charts since its recent release. She sat down with BBC Radio to discuss her experience with JT. Read her comments below: 

So where did it all start?

It all started back home in Holland. I always had this passion for music. All of a sudden I discovered YouTube and it wasn’t really big in Holland yet so I felt like I discovered this new thing. I was like: ‘This is cool, let’s give it a go. Let’s try and put one up there myself and sing a cover of one of my favourite songs’.

I started posting TLC’s Waterfalls and from there all of a sudden, people just started watching it. I was really surprised. From there I just started posting more and more videos and people started getting into it, saying: ‘Hey, can you sing this song?’.

In about six months record companies started to contact me. It went crazy. I took the chance, went over to the US to meet with all these different labels.

Justin Timberlake had seen my videos and he was setting up his own label. He invited me to come over to Chicago to one of his shows. I got to meet him there which I was crazy nervous about, I didn’t know what to say or to expect.

I saw a piano in the room and I played him How Come You Don’t Call Me by Prince. We talked a little bit afterwards and he was very nice, very down to earth. Then a month later I was signed.

So at what point did you stop being nervous around Justin Timberlake?

I think once I actually got in to the studio with him and started writing with him. I just saw how open he was and how interested he was in what I had to say.

We just work together really well. It felt like he was a mentor and he started becoming like more of a big brother to me. It’s just so nice to work with him, he’s so funny.
